Over the years I have photographed countless proposals across Kansas City, and each one has had its own completely unique approach all with the same outcome: getting engaged! One of my favorite parts of proposal photography is getting to know the person who is proposing before the big day. We talk through the plan, figure out the best angle, map out where I will be hiding, and make sure everything is in place so that when the moment happens, it is captured perfectly without the person being proposed to ever suspecting a thing.
If you are planning a proposal in Kansas City and you are not sure where to start, you are in the right place. This is my complete guide to the best proposal spots in Kansas City and the surrounding suburbs, straight from someone who has photographed them all.
What to Know Before You Propose in Kansas City
Hire a proposal photographer (duh!). This is the single best thing you can do for your proposal. You are about to create one of the most important memories of your lives together, and having someone there to capture it means you get to be fully present in the moment without worrying about a phone propped up against a rock, or a family member totally spoiling the surprise by popping out with a phone. I work with the person proposing ahead of time to make sure I am in the right spot, at the right angle, completely unassuming.
Timing matters. Golden hour, which is the hour before sunset, is hands down the best time for proposal photos in Kansas City. The light is warm, soft, and flattering, and it makes every location look even more beautiful than it already is. If you have flexibility in your timing, plan your proposal around sunset.
Have a plan but be ready to be flexible. Kansas City weather can be unpredictable, especially in spring and fall. Do not stress about having a backup location figured out on your own though. When we work together on your proposal, I will send you multiple backup options so that no matter what the weather does, we have a plan in place and the moment goes off without a hitch.
Think about what comes next. After the proposal, you are going to want to celebrate. Whether that means a reservation at a nearby restaurant, a hotel room with champagne waiting, or family and friends gathered nearby for a surprise party, having something planned for after the moment makes the whole experience feel even more special.
Outside the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of Kansas City, and the outside of the museum is absolutely stunning for a proposal. The famous shuttlecock sculptures on the front lawn give your photos a sense of place that is uniquely Kansas City. The wide open lawn, the beautiful stone facade of the building, and the reflecting pool area all make for a backdrop that feels grand without feeling stuffy.
This is one of those locations where you have a lot of flexibility in terms of where exactly the moment happens. Some couples love the idea of proposing right in front of the shuttlecocks, while others prefer the more quiet and romantic area near the reflecting pool or along the tree lined walkways on the south side of the building.
Best time to go: Golden hour here is absolutely magical. The warm light hits the stone building in the most beautiful way, and the lawn tends to thin out a bit in the evening which gives you a little more privacy for the moment.
What to know: The grounds of the Nelson Atkins are free and open to the public, so you do not need to plan ahead or get any special permission to propose outside. Parking is available in the lot on the south side of the building. This is a popular spot on weekends, so if you want fewer people around, a weekday evening proposal is worth considering.
Inside the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
Proposing inside the Nelson Atkins is one of the most unique options in all of Kansas City, and I will be completely honest with you: it is also the most challenging location on this entire list to photograph. The permission process takes planning, you have to be mindful of any events happening at the museum that could affect the space, and coordinating a hidden photographer inside a public museum requires a lot more logistics than an outdoor proposal. It is not impossible, but it is not something you can decide on a week out.
That said, if the Nelson Atkins is a place that is deeply meaningful to the two of you, it is absolutely worth the effort. The architecture is breathtaking, the light inside the building is unlike anything else in Kansas City, and the images that come out of it are truly one of a kind.
What to know: Reach out to the museum directly to ask about photography permission before anything else: nelson-atkins.org. You will also want to check their events calendar to make sure the space will be available and accessible the way you need it to be.
Best time to go: The museum is open late on Thursdays, which tends to be a quieter evening than a weekend. If you have flexibility, that is the window worth planning around.
If the Nelson Atkins holds a special place in your relationship, do not let the logistics scare you off. Just go in knowing it takes more time and preparation than anything else on this list.
Liberty Memorial
Liberty Memorial is one of those Kansas City landmarks that stops you in your tracks every single time. The tower itself is a stunning piece of architecture, and the view from the top of the hill looking out over the Kansas City skyline is one of the best in the entire city.
There are two spots here that I love for proposals. The first is right at the base of the tower, where you are elevated above the city and the Kansas City skyline stretches out in front of you in every direction. It feels epic. The second is down at the bottom of the hill, where the long open grass field leads your eye all the way down toward Union Station. That lower vantage point gives you a completely different feel, quieter and more intimate, with the tower rising behind you and the station ahead. Both are stunning and the right choice really comes down to the feel you are going for.
Best time to go: Sunset here is absolutely stunning. The light hitting the tower and the skyline behind you creates a warmth that is hard to replicate anywhere else. Golden hour at Liberty Memorial is something special.
What to know: The grounds are free and open to the public, so you do not need to plan ahead for your proposal here. Parking is available in the lot directly off of Main Street.
Bonus: Liberty Memorial sits right next to Union Station, so if you have dinner reservations or a celebration planned right after, the two locations pair together beautifully.
Union Station – inside or outside!
Union Station is one of the most beautiful buildings in Kansas City, and it makes for a proposal setting that is both dramatic and timeless. The grand architecture, the soaring ceilings, and the ornate details inside give the space a feeling that is hard to match anywhere else in the city.
The main hall is the showstopper. The towering ceilings and the sweeping open floor give your photographer room to capture the full scale of the space, and the natural light that filters through the large windows adds a softness that makes every image feel cinematic. Please note that if you do decide to propose during the Christmas time, this main hall is occupied by an event.
There is also a second floor option that overlooks the entire hall, BUT permission must be asked by Union Station to gain access to this upper floor. You can contact them at their website, or go in person to ask!
However, if Christmas decor is your thing, then Union Station is a great choice. It transforms the entire space into something truly special, and a proposal here in December has an energy that is unlike any other time of year. Just know that the holiday season brings a lot of foot traffic, so if you are planning a Christmas proposal at Union Station, expect people around and plan your moment accordingly. It is still absolutely doable, and honestly the bustle of the season adds to the magic, but it is worth going in with eyes open.
Best time to go: A weekday visit or an early morning arrival gives you more space and privacy for the moment, especially during the holiday season when weekends can get very crowded.
What to know: Union Station is free and open to the public, though individual exhibits inside may require tickets.
The Plaza
The Country Club Plaza is one of the most well known spots in Kansas City for a reason. The Spanish inspired architecture, the fountains, the courtyards, and the tree lined streets make it a beautiful setting any time of year. There are so many little pockets and corners on the Plaza that work beautifully for a proposal, from the larger fountain areas to the quieter side streets where you can find a moment that feels completely private even in the middle of the city.
If you are considering a Plaza proposal, the holiday season is worth serious consideration. The Plaza lights are a Kansas City tradition, and the way the entire district transforms into a sea of warm lights from Thanksgiving through the new year is something that has to be seen to be believed. For the full effect of the lights, plan your proposal after dark so the entire Plaza is glowing around you. A proposal on the Plaza on a December night with the Christmas lights lit up is one of the most romantic things I have ever photographed in this city.
That said, the Plaza during the holiday season is busy. There will be people around, especially on weekends and during the lighting ceremony itself. If you want more breathing room for the moment, a weeknight proposal gives you that warm, glowing backdrop with a little more space to work with. One of my favorite areas is the Cheesecake Factory building and parking garage!
What to know: The Plaza is free and open to the public. Parking is available in several garages throughout the district.
Loose Park
Loose Park is one of my absolute favorite places to photograph proposals in Kansas City, and at this point I have been there hundreds of times. It is a beautiful, sprawling park in the heart of the city with wide open lawns, mature trees, a rose garden, and a peaceful pond that reflects the light in the most gorgeous way. It has a natural, unhurried feel that makes it perfect for couples who want their proposal to feel intimate and romantic rather than grand and sweeping. I know every corner of this park, which means I know exactly where to be and where to hide.
The rose garden is a standout spot within the park. When the roses are in bloom in late spring and early summer, it is honestly one of the prettiest settings in all of Kansas City. The garden paths and the lush greenery give a photographer so many angles to work with, and the scale of it means I can stay well out of sight while still capturing every single moment.
The pond area is another beautiful option, especially at golden hour when the light bounces off the water and everything turns warm and golden.
Best time to go: Late spring through early fall is when Loose Park is at its most lush and vibrant. The rose garden typically peaks in May and June. Golden hour here is stunning year round.
What to know: Loose Park is a Kansas City Parks and Recreation park, free and open to the public. Parking is available along Wornall Road and within the park itself.
Shawnee Mission Park
Shawnee Mission Park is one of the best kept secrets for proposals in the Kansas City area. Tucked away in Johnson County, this park has a completely different feel from anything you will find inside the city limits. The rolling hills, the wooded trails, and the wide open spaces make it feel like you have stepped away from everything, which is exactly what makes it so special for a proposal.
The trails and tall grass areas throughout the park are some of my favorite spots to work in. There is something about being surrounded by nature, away from the noise of the city, that makes a proposal feel completely your own. The natural coverage along the trails also gives me plenty of places to stay hidden while still having a clear line to capture every single moment.
One of the things I love most about Shawnee Mission Park as a proposal location is how easy it is to make the plan feel completely natural. Suggesting a walk through the park is one of the most low key, unsuspicious things you can do, and it gets you exactly where you need to be. Bonus points if you bring the dogs along. Nothing says a casual afternoon like a walk with your pups.
The park also tends to be less crowded than spots closer to the city, which means more privacy and more room to breathe when the moment happens.
Best time to go: Golden hour here is stunning, especially in the fall when the trees turn and the entire park goes warm with color. Fall proposals at Shawnee Mission Park are some of my favorites I have ever photographed.
What to know: Shawnee Mission Park is a Johnson County Park, free and open to the public. Parking is available at multiple lots throughout the park.
Lake Lotawana
Lake Lotawana is a hidden gem just east of Kansas City, and it is one of those locations that feels worlds away from the city even though it is only about 30 minutes out. The lake itself is stunning, with calm water, wooded shorelines, and a peaceful, unhurried atmosphere that makes it perfect for a proposal that feels private and completely removed from the rest of the world.
The waterfront areas around the lake give you a backdrop that is hard to find anywhere else close to Kansas City. The reflections on the water, the tree lines along the shore, and the way the light settles in at golden hour create images that feel genuinely different from anything you would get at a city location.
One of my favorite things about Lake Lotawana as a proposal location is how naturally the plan can come together. There is a great restaurant right on the lake called Marina 27, which makes for the perfect cover. Take your partner to dinner, and then suggest a walk down to the dock after. By the time they realize what is happening, you are already in the most beautiful spot on the water. And if you let Marina 27 know ahead of time that a proposal is happening, they will have champagne ready for you when you come back in to celebrate.
Best time to go: Golden hour here is absolutely beautiful, especially in the warmer months when the water is calm and the light is long. Fall is also a stunning time to visit when the trees around the lake start to change.
Bourgmont Winery
If the two of you love wine, Bourgmont Winery is a proposal location that feels tailor made for you. The property has a ton of open space, a beautiful little pond with a dock to walk out to, and the kind of relaxed, romantic atmosphere that makes a proposal feel completely natural. It does not feel staged or over the top. It just feels like a perfect afternoon that happens to end with a ring.
The pond and dock are my favorite spot on the property for the moment itself. Walking out to the water gives you a natural destination, a reason to wander away from the crowd, and a stunning backdrop when it all happens.
One of the things that makes Bourgmont really special as a proposal location is how perfectly it sets up what comes next. The winery is a beautiful place for family and friends to gather, which makes it an ideal spot to plan a surprise celebration right after the proposal. Imagine popping the question on the dock and then turning around to find everyone you love already there waiting with a glass of wine in hand.
What to know: Bourgmont Winery is located just outside of Kansas City in Bucyrus, Kansas. It’s best to reach out to the Winery beforehand, especially if you want to host a post engagement party. You can find their website at: www.bourgmont.com/. They also host wedding events too!
