Best Fall Engagement Outfit Ideas
Before diving into different fall engagement ideas, the first thing I want to say when it comes to choosing what to wear is to always choose what makes you feel comfortable and confident.
Your engagement outfits are an important part of your session and a representation of who you are. You don’t have to wear something just because it’s “trendy” or conforms to specific norms. The best outfit is the one that feels the most like YOU.
Also, be sure to talk to your photographer beforehand about how many different outfits you’ll have time for, as this will ultimately influence what you choose to wear. During my sessions, I typically tell my couples they will have time for two outfits.
If you won’t have time during your session to change but want to switch up what you’re wearing, make sure you bring along an extra jacket, flannel, scarf, etc., to change up your photos.
Here are some fall engagement outfit ideas you can try (remember, these are just suggestions – take what works for you and leave what doesn’t):
Denim
Denim + fall are a perfect match for me. Denim photographs so well, and the blue always pops against warmer backdrops. You could wear denim jeans, denim tops, overalls, or add in a denim jacket.

Cream or white colors
Cream / white colors are another color that looks stunning with various backdrops. You could wear a cream / white dress, pants, a button-up, or a dressy top. A white or cream colored top or bottom always pairs well with black for an elegant, classy look – especially if that’s the vibe you’re going for.

Trench coats/jackets
Trench coats to me feel like fall. They are cozy and add so much to your outfit. Plus, there are so many different types of coats you can choose from, whether it’s a leather trench coat, a plaid coat, peacoats, faux leather, etc.
I love a good coat and boot combo. If you don’t have or want to wear a trench coat, you can always bring along a favorite jacket instead!

Flannels
Flannels are a great option for a fall engagement session – not only will they keep you warm, but they also add versatility to your outfit! Plus, since they are looser, they are easy to move around in.
One of my favorite fall outfit combos is a flannel, jeans, and a pair of boots – so simple, but this outfit always looks great with different backdrops and fall foliage.

Sweater dresses / long-sleeved dresses
If you want to wear a dress to your session, you can try a sweater dress or long-sleeved dress – these aren’t only stylish but will definitely keep you warm on a chilly fall day.

Sweaters
Chunky sweaters, knitted sweaters, turtle neck sweaters, cardigans, wool sweaters – there are so many different options you could choose from when it comes to sweaters that would look amazing for your engagement photos!

Quarter zip pullover
Quarter zip pullovers are functional and cozy. They work great, especially if you want to add layers to your outfit.

Shoes
There are so many different shoes you could wear! My personal suggestions are white sneakers or boots (ankle or knee high). Bring shoes that you are comfortable in, as you’ll be moving around a lot!
When in doubt, always have a backup pair of shoes to walk in, especially if you’re going to various locations during your session.

Don’t forget the accessories!
Fall is great for accessorizing! Some accessories you could bring are:
- Hats
- Scarves
- Extra jackets/sweaters to layer with
- Jewelery
- Belts
- A blanket
- A beanie

What colors should you wear for your fall engagement photos?
When it comes to choosing the perfect colors for your fall engagement photos, my first suggestion is to always check out the setting you’ll be working with. Colors that I’ve found to work best with vibrant fall foliage and golden hour are brown, maroon, cream, beige, burnt orange, and anything that is rich and warm to pair with your backdrop.
