Two Kansas City natives who now call Dallas home, they came back to the city they grew up in to celebrate surrounded by the people they love most. And they did it with one of the most stunning skyline backdrops in the entire city above them.

Hotel Kansas City is one of the most iconic buildings in all of downtown Kansas City. Originally built in the early 1900s and beautifully restored, the historic property is home to several stunning event spaces totaling over 20,000 square feet. But the crown jewel of them all is the Starlight Ballroom on the 15th floor.
The Starlight Ballroom is Kansas City’s only rooftop indoor/outdoor event space, and it is unlike anything else in the city. The space features sleek, contemporary design with floor to ceiling views of the Kansas City skyline. Step outside onto the connected terrace and you are standing 15 floors above downtown Kansas City with one of the most breathtaking views in the entire region stretched out in front of you.
With a capacity of 35 to 250 guests, the Starlight Ballroom works beautifully for both intimate celebrations and larger gatherings. Whether you are using the indoor space for your reception and the terrace for cocktail hour, or simply letting your guests flow freely between the two all night long, this venue delivers an experience that is truly one of a kind in Kansas City.
Why the Starlight Ballroom is One of Kansas City’s Best Rooftop Wedding Venues
As a Kansas City wedding photographer, I have photographed in a lot of beautiful spaces. But there is something about the Starlight Ballroom that genuinely stops me in my tracks every single time.
There is something about being fifteen floors above the city that makes a celebration feel elevated in every sense of the word. Guests gravitate toward that terrace all night long, and it adds this incredible layer of atmosphere to a reception that you simply cannot manufacture inside a ballroom with no windows.
And then there is the light. At golden hour, the Kansas City skyline catches the sun in a way that is almost unfair. The warm glow that washes over the terrace during those last thirty minutes before sunset is the kind of light that photographers spend their entire careers chasing. Couple portraits up there feel cinematic in a way that is hard to put into words. Whether it is a golden hour portrait on the terrace, a wide shot of the reception with the city glowing through the windows, or a quiet moment between the couple stealing a few minutes alone outside, the Starlight Ballroom delivers something truly special at every turn.
Katie and Justin’s Wedding at Hotel Kansas City
Katie and Justin are the kind of couple that makes your job as a photographer feel effortless. They have this calm, lovely presence about them that radiated through every single moment of their day. And while they absolutely served looks from start to finish, it was the quiet giggles between them that I will remember most.
Before the ceremony even began, my team and I were able to take full advantage of the hotel. The bridesmaids had their portraits taken up on the Starlight Ballroom terrace with the Kansas City skyline as their backdrop, and the groomsmen were photographed in the grill room, which gave their photos a completely different and moody feel. Having that kind of variety before the ceremony even starts is one of the things that makes Hotel KC so exceptional as a full day wedding venue.
Katie and Justin chose not to do a first look, saving that moment for the Tudor Ballroom aisle. When Katie walked toward Justin for the very first time, the tears came naturally and beautifully. It was one of those moments that reminds you why some couples choose to wait.
From there the day flowed through every corner of the hotel. Portraits in the gorgeous lobby, inside the Nighthawk, out on the street in front of the hotel with that city vibe Katie had always envisioned, and back up on the Starlight terrace. Every space in this hotel tells a different story, and having all of that variety within steps of each other makes for an incredibly rich and full wedding gallery. By the time the reception kicked off in the Starlight Ballroom, the energy in that room was warm, celebratory, and completely full of love.
It was just a really lovely day. Sometimes that is the perfect way to describe a wedding, and for Katie and Justin, lovely feels exactly right.
My Advice for Your Starlight Ballroom Wedding at Hotel Kansas City.
Plan your portrait route in advance. Hotel Kansas City has so many incredible spaces, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed on the day of. I always recommend mapping out which spaces you want to hit for portraits before the wedding day so you can move efficiently and make the most of every single space. The lobby, the Nighthawk, the street out front, and of course the Starlight terrace are all must visits.
Factor in elevator time. This is something that catches a lot of couples off guard. Moving between floors at Hotel KC means waiting for elevators, and on a wedding day when you are in a full gown with a wedding party in tow, that time adds up quickly. When building out your timeline, make sure you are accounting for travel time between spaces. I always build in a little extra buffer so we never feel rushed getting from one floor to the next.
Invest in a planner or coordinator team. Hotel Kansas City is a multi level, multi space venue, and having a planner team rather than a single coordinator makes an enormous difference. When different parts of your wedding are happening on different floors simultaneously, you need people who can be in multiple places at once. A strong planner team means one person can be managing the reception setup on the 15th floor while another is keeping the wedding party on schedule in the getting ready suite. Do not skip the terrace during golden hour. I cannot stress this enough. If your timeline allows for even ten to fifteen minutes on the terrace as the sun is going down, please take them. The light and the skyline together create something that is honestly hard to believe is real. It is one of those moments in a wedding gallery that stops people in their tracks.
Lean into the city. One of the things that makes Hotel KC so unique is its downtown location. Getting outside on the street, even just for fifteen minutes, adds such a different dimension to your gallery. The urban backdrop paired with your wedding attire is a combination that never gets old.
