Top Summer Engagement Outfit Ideas

First things first, before you check out these different summer engagement outfit ideas, I want to mention that when it comes to choosing what to wear, I always suggest choosing clothing items that make you feel comfortable and confident.
Your engagement outfits are an important part of your session and a representation of who you are. You don’t have to wear something just because it’s “trendy” or conforms to specific norms.
If something is too constricting or doesn’t feel comfortable to move around in, you don’t have to wear it. The best outfit is the one that feels the most like YOU.
Also, be sure to talk to your photographer beforehand about how many outfits you’ll have time for, as this will ultimately influence what you choose to wear. During my sessions, I typically tell my couples they will have time for two outfits.
Here are some summer engagement outfit ideas you can try (remember, these are just suggestions – take what works for you and leave what doesn’t):
Denim

Denim is a great choice for summer, and it photographs so well! For your session, you could wear jeans, a denim jumper, a denim top, overalls, a denim jacket, etc.
If you do choose to wear jeans to your session, I recommend that you and your partner both wear them and pair them with a dressy top, such as a tank top, button-up, Henley, or off-the-shoulder top.
Dresses

Dresses are perfect for a summer engagement session, and there are so many options you could choose from! You could choose a casual sundress, a printed dress, a maxi dress, a bell sleeve dress, or even a white dress for your session. Also, you could always opt for a skirt, too, if you don’t want to wear a dress.
Rompers/jumpsuits

Rompers or jumpsuits are an adorable choice for summer engagement sessions! They are cute and easy to move around in! You could wear a flirty floral print romper, a denim romper, a balloon leg jumpsuit, or something different, depending on the style and look you’re going for.
Cream or white colors

Cream / white colors are another color that looks stunning with various backdrops. You could wear a cream / white dress, pants, a button-up, or a dressy top. A white or cream colored top or bottom always gives an elegant, classy look – especially if that’s the vibe you’re going for.
Speaking of colors, one color I’d recommend avoiding during your summer engagement session is black, as it absorbs too much heat – lighter colors work much better for this time of year.
Button ups / polos

Button-ups/polos give off a classic summer look. You can opt for a striped button-up or a solid color polo, or even a linen button-down. Make sure that your button-up or polo is well-fitted. Also, you can’t go wrong with a pair of long, fitted pants – khaki pants always look nice!
Shoes

There are so many different shoes you could choose from for your summer engagement session! You could wear boat shoes, wedges, loafers, platform sandals, flat sandals, heels, white sneakers, etc. The possibilities feel unlimited in the summer!
Always bring shoes that you are comfortable in, as you’ll be moving around a lot! When in doubt, always have a backup pair of shoes to walk in, especially if you’re going to various locations during your session. Also, since it’s summer and the weather will be warm, you can also go barefoot for some photos if that’s your vibe!
Don’t forget the accessories!

Summer is great for accessorizing! Some accessories you could bring are:
- Hats
- Jewelry (rings, necklaces, watches, bracelets, etc.)
- Belts
- Fun Sunglasses (no Oakleys here ok?)
What Colors Should You Wear For Your Summer Engagement Photos?

When it comes to choosing the perfect colors for your summer engagement photos, my first suggestion is to always check out the setting you’ll be working with.
Colors that I’ve found to work best with the gorgeous golden summer lighting are white, muted earth tones, soft neutrals, and blue. White and tan, white and blue, or white, tan, and light blue are all colors that I have found work well together and also photograph well with different backgrounds throughout Kansas City during the summer.
Or you could also choose white, tan, and add in a different neutral color if blue isn’t your color, such as light pink, lavender, jewel tones, etc.
